Spur On Love went to China with the expectation of photographing one particular adoption story, Bo’s story. However, there were actually several families adopting and meeting their children on the exact same day and I was able to snap photos of each family. It has been such an honor to get to know these families and be a small part of their Gotcha Day. I have asked each family to share a bit of their story of either how they felt on Gotcha Day or why they decided to adopt.
Below Amy Ashley shares a bit of their adoption story. I love how their story involves members of their community and a camp for orphans! Continue reading to learn more.
“Here is just a glimpse of our adoption story. It’s really God’s story, and I just get to tell it. The story really got started about 2 years ago in June of 2012. Our pastor’s wife was about to go on a mission trip to China to work as a volunteer for Bring Me Hope, which holds summer camps for orphans in China. One Wednesday night , she told a story about an infertile couple , who were about to adopt from China. I knew about infertility myself, as my husband and I had struggled for 10 years to have our son. As I sat there in that church pew, all I can say is that something came over me. After that night, I began to feel such a burden to adopt from China. I thought about it for days and nights. It seemed impossible at the time, because my husband was having some very serious back problems. I wasn’t even sure if we would qualify to adopt from China. I just started praying about it, and I asked someone else to pray for clarity and direction for a matter that I was praying for. About 6 months later, I found out that my niece would be going to volunteer for Bring Me Hope in July of 2013, along with our pastor’s wife and another girl from our church. I just kept praying about God’s will for our family. In July, 2013, these 3 ladies went to work at the BMH camp in China, and they began sending us pictures of one of their campers. After seeing those pictures, we knew that this camper was our daughter. We began working to get her file, but had to wait for 13 days because another family had her file. We got the call that we could have her file on 8/12/13. For almost 1 year after that, we went through all the paperwork and waiting that is part of the adoption process. Finally, on July 28th, 2014, it was Gotcha Day. From beginning to end, we were amazed and overwhelmed at all that God had done. We are humbled that God chose us to be her family. One of my favorite bible verses is Proverbs 3:5-6, which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths”. This is so true and was so evident in this journey. I am so grateful for God’s leading on this path , and I am so grateful for those 3 ladies who answered God’s call to go to China. God is real, He is faithful, and He is on time.”
